When purchasing a new (or used) machine from forklift dealers there are a few key questions you should always make sure to ask before actually parting with your money.
How much can the forklift lift?
Depending on the type of machine you are thinking of purchasing, there is a huge variety of weights that individual forklifts can actually handle (ranging anywhere from 2 to 15 tons). When deciding what kind of machine to go for, knowing how much weight the vehicle can actually deal with is key to making an informed decision.
What kind of fuel does it use?
When purchasing a new machine always ask any potential forklift dealers what range of fuel options they have available. Lift trucks tend to operate on diesel, electric batteries or liquefied petroleum gas. The kind of fuel the forklift uses will have a big impact on it’s running costs, safety factors and strength.
Does the forklift release fumes?
Always make sure to check with the forklift dealers to see if the vehicle you intend to buy releases a lot of fumes, as this is a particularly common problem amongst diesel and gas powered trucks. Those that do should only be used in an outdoor environment. If you need a forklift to use inside a warehouse they should always be completely fume free.
How much noise will it make?
If you intend to use a forklift on a busy work site, in a crowded factory or a warehouse, it’s probably worth finding out just how much noise the vehicle makes during operation, as noisy machines can be a major source of distraction for other people working in the area. In some cases lift trucks can be so loud that the driver will need protective equipment for their ears, which should be purchased from the forklift dealers at the same time as the vehicle.
Will I need any extra equipment?
It’s quite likely that along with any forklift purchased, you will also need to acquire some additional equipment in order to get the most out of the vehicle. Generally electric powered forklifts need a range of additional equipment (batteries, cranes, refuelling storage facilities) in order to see full operational use, whilst some diesel powered lift trucks may require protective head gear for their drivers on top of their basic fuel needs. Forklift dealers should be able to advise you as to what kind of specific extra equipment the forklift you’ve chosen to buy will need.
